Choosing the Right Hay for Your Herd: A Quick Guide
Tifton, Sudan, Oats, or Coastal? Here’s What Works Best for South Texas Livestock
Feeding livestock is more than just putting hay in the ring – it’s about matching the right forage to the right animals at the right time of year.
At Graff Grown, we don’t just sell hay – we help ranchers choose forage that fuels performance.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what we currently grow and recommend in South Texas:
🐄 Oats/Triticale Mix
A cool-season combo with great digestibility.
Best for: Weaned calves, nursing cows, and stocker calves.
Why it works: Holds protein and energy well into cooler temps.
🐎 Tifton Hay
Hybrid Bermuda with moderate stems and high leaf ratio.
Best for: show cattle, and high-performance herds, grass fed beef raiser.
Why it works: Clean, soft texture, easy to digest, minimal waste. No grain! Great for grass fed beef!
🐂 Forage Sorghum Baleage
Warm-season sorghum grass harvested at peak maturity and moisture for optimal fermentation.
Best for: Beef and dairy cattle needing high energy.
Why it works: Excellent TDN, great for fast growth or milk production. Contain at least 10% seed in each bale.
🐄 Coastal Baleage
Top-tier digestibility and palatability.
Best for: Winter feeding or high-demand herds.
Why it works: Consistent quality, longer storage life, and less spoilage.
